Hello! My name is Andrew, and I've been a designer at Funko for over five years. I'd like to share with you the fascinating process of creating Funko Pop! figures and how my passion for pop culture turned into the career of my dreams.

What motivated you to become who you are now? How did your journey begin?

Since childhood, I've been captivated by comics, animation, and video games. My room was filled with posters, figurines, and other memorabilia. When I discovered Funko and their unique Pop! figures, I knew this was what I wanted to do.

I remember the first time I saw a Funko Pop! figure in a local comic book store. It was of my favorite Marvel character. I was amazed at how they managed to capture the essence of the character in such a simple form.

What was your joining the Funko team like?

After graduating from art school, I applied for a junior designer position at Funko. The selection process was challenging: I had to demonstrate my skills, understanding of the brand, and creativity.

One of the tasks during the interview was to create a concept for a figure based on a character from a popular TV series. I chose a less-known character with a deep personality. My approach impressed the team, and I was hired.

What was the first toy you created like?Tell me a bit about the creation process.

My first figure was of a character from a well-known video game. I felt both excitement and the pressure of responsibility.

1.Choosing the Character and Research

Before starting the design, I thoroughly studied the character: their history, motivations, and unique appearance.

I spent hours watching gameplay footage, examining concept art, and reading fan theories. It was important to understand what made this character special to fans.

2.Creating Sketches

Beginning with simple sketches, I experimented with different poses and facial expressions.

Since Funko Pop! figures have a distinctive style with large heads and eyes, I needed to find a balance between stylization and recognizability. I tried various hairstyles and accessories to emphasize the character's traits.

3.Team Collaboration and Feedback

After the initial sketches, I presented my ideas to the design team and art director. We discussed what could be improved, which details to add or remove.

My colleagues suggested highlighting the symbol on the character's costume, as it holds significant meaning in the game's storyline. I revised the sketches, incorporating these recommendations.

 3D Modeling and Prototyping

After the 2D design was approved, we moved on to creating the 3D model.

1.Working with 3D Artists

I collaborated closely with the team of 3D modelers to ensure all details were accurately translated into three-dimensional form.

We discussed the thickness of elements to ensure they would be durable during production, as well as technical limitations like undercuts and the feasibility of painting small parts.

2.The First Prototype

When the first prototype was ready, we evaluated it carefully.

Holding the physical model I'd been working on for so long was an incredible feeling. We noticed some details looked different in reality than on the screen, so we made adjustments to the model.

Painting and Detailing

Painting is one of the most crucial stages that brings the figure to life.

1.Selecting the Color Scheme

We used official color palettes from the game but also considered how the colors would appear on the figure's material.

Some colors that look great on screen can appear dull or too bright on a vinyl figure. We experimented with shades and finishes—matte, glossy, metallic.

2.Adding Special Effects

For this character, we decided to add a glow effect to the eyes using fluorescent paint.

It was a risky move, but the result was impressive. In the dark, the figure's eyes glow, adding a special charm.

Approval from the Licensor

We sent the prototype and photos to the game's rights holders for approval.

They were pleasantly surprised by our attention to detail and creative approach. They only asked to slightly adjust the color of one accessory to match the latest version from a game update.

Preparing for Mass Production

After receiving all approvals, we prepared the documentation for manufacturing.

Quality Control

We worked closely with the quality control department to ensure each figure met our standards.

We developed detailed instructions for production, specifying exact colors, painting techniques, and other technical details. This helps prevent errors during manufacturing.

The Figure's Market Debut

When the figure appeared in stores, I felt genuine pride.

I visited several shops to see it on the shelves. I even overheard a conversation between two collectors discussing how cool it looked. That was the best reward for all the hard work.

Did you and the team receive any feedback from the audience?

Following the release, we received a lot of positive feedback.

Fans wrote on social media, shared photos of their collections. Some even requested figures of other characters from the same game. This inspired us for new projects.

Ongoing Development and Challenges

Working as a designer at Funko is a continuous journey of improvement and learning new technologies.

1.Implementing New Materials

We began experimenting with transparent materials to create effects like magic, smoke, or water.

In one figure, we used clear blue vinyl to mimic flowing water. It added dynamism and uniqueness to the piece.

2.Collaborating with Other Artists

Occasionally, we invite renowned artists to create exclusive series.

I was fortunate to work with a famous illustrator who designed a unique figure for a limited edition release. It was an invaluable experience sharing knowledge and inspiration.

Participating in Events and Conventions

Funko actively participates in various events like Comic-Con, where we showcase new products and interact with fans.

At the last Comic-Con, I conducted a masterclass on figure design. It was delightful to see people's enthusiasm and their eagerness to learn more about our work.

Engaging with the Community

We always listen to suggestions and ideas from fans.

One fan sent us a letter with an idea for a figure based on a character from an obscure but cult classic film. His passion inspired us, and we decided to bring this idea to life. The figure became a hit among collectors.
