Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what led you to become a 3D interior designer?
"My name is Alina Panasenko, and I am 19 years old. I'm completing my studies in design at the Sumy Technical College. I have also completed courses in 3ds Max and interior visualization. Construction has been a part of my life since childhood, so it’s no surprise that I’m now developing my skills in this field—my father is a builder. I enjoy the atmosphere of construction, especially the creative process of bringing ideas to life. You first put your vision on paper, and then, as the project unfolds, you see it come to reality."
What are the unique aspects of your field, and what do you enjoy the most about it?
"Firstly, If you have a strong imagination, it allows you to generate new ideas and combine aesthetics, concept, and functionality. Creativity in this field is extremely important.
Secondly the process of creating designs is quite flexible, as nowadays all you need is a computer, and you can work from anywhere in the world. Of course, it’s essential to mention the importance of software knowledge, but there are many resources online, making it easy to learn.
Thirdly the process of selecting materials, color schemes, furniture, and other details is fascinating.
I suppose while describing the unique aspects of my field, I also pointed out what I enjoy the most. The process of discussing ideas, creating, and bringing them to life is incredibly interesting. I love creating a visual story for a space, transforming ideas into realistic 3D projects."
What does the process of creating 3D models look like? Please explain each step in detail.
"Here’s a detailed description of each step in the 3D interior design process:
First stage. Concept Discussion, Space Planning, Sketches
This is the foundational stage where the project’s direction is set. The designer meets with the client to discuss their preferences, functional needs, and aesthetic goals. Based on this, the initial design concept is developed. Sketches and space planning follow, helping to visualize the main ideas of the project and determine zones for furniture, lighting, and décor.
3D Model Creation Process
Second stage. 3D Space Modeling
Once the concept is approved, the 3D modeling phase begins. This involves creating a three-dimensional model of the space, representing all its elements—walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, etc. It's essential to maintain accurate proportions and measurements to ensure that the model reflects the real-world space. This stage allows for a visual understanding of how the interior will look when completed.
Third stage. Texturing
At this stage, textures are applied to the 3D model to simulate the materials that will be used in the real interior, such as wood, metal, fabrics, tiles, glass, and more. Texturing brings realism to the project by showing how surfaces interact with light and shadows. It’s one of the most crucial steps for achieving a realistic look.

Fourth stage. Lighting
Lighting setup is critical because it can entirely change how a space is perceived. Both natural and artificial light sources are added to visualize how the space will look in different lighting conditions—daylight, evening light, soft or intense lighting. Proper lighting highlights the textures, colors, and shapes of the objects in the scene, bringing the design to life.

This step involves positioning virtual cameras to capture the best angles and perspectives of the space. Cameras help visualize the space as it would appear to a viewer and allow the designer to create realistic scenes from precise viewpoints, highlighting important design features.

After lighting and camera setup, the rendering process begins. Rendering is the process of creating photorealistic images from the 3D model. The software calculates how light interacts with the objects in the scene, producing final images that show how the interior will look once built.
Seventh stage. Presentation
The final step is presenting the completed project to the client. Depending on the requirements, the presentation may include several photorealistic renders from different angles, video walkthroughs, or interactive 3D models. This stage allows the designer to showcase how the client's ideas were transformed into a realistic project, ready for implementation."
What trends are currently dominating in transformational solutions for interiors?
"Today, the trends include: modular furniture, minimalism with high functionality, technology integration, sustainability, and the transformation of zones."
How does 3D design help better visualize the possibilities of space transformation for the client?
"In general, 3D visualization provides a clear understanding of what will be created. It’s quite difficult to form a space and imagine all the details on your own, unless you've been doing it for many years. For those who struggle to visualize how colors will harmonize with specific furniture or with the surrounding space under different lighting conditions, whether it be natural or artificial, 3D design becomes incredibly helpful. It's also beneficial when you can bring your ideas to life in graphics first, giving you a clear understanding of whether a certain design works for that space or if it needs to be changed or replaced entirely.
The spatial layout is also clearly demonstrated, helping to understand how it will translate to real life. While there are many beautiful images, in reality, everything must harmonize with the actual place where it will be situated. 3D design helps people choose the option they will love the most. All of these aspects show that there is no better way to visualize a project. You can create multiple versions of the same design by just changing a few details, all without wasting time on physical alterations. It's incredibly convenient."
Are there specific requirements for furniture or materials in transformational interiors?
"Each material must meet the requirements for different areas of use. It's important to remember that every material has its own properties, and careful selection is one of the most crucial stages in the design process."
Which design elements are most often subject to transformation: walls, furniture, or lighting?
"All of these elements can undergo transformation. However, in each project, certain aspects may be transformed more than others. For example, furniture often plays a key role in flexible spaces, with modular or multifunctional pieces being commonly used. Walls can also be adapted with movable partitions or adjustable layouts to change the flow of the space. Lighting is another element that can be transformed, with dimmable, adjustable, or smart lighting systems that adapt to different moods or times of the day. The degree of transformation depends on the specific needs and functionality of the space."
How do you ensure that transformational design remains functional and practical?
"Well-thought-out zoning, knowledge of materials and mechanisms, and the use of technology ensure that everything remains functional and practical. A designer knows how to combine all of this while maintaining aesthetic appeal."
What challenges do you face when creating interiors that can be easily changed or adapted to new needs?
"Challenges vary and are always individual, depending on the project and the client’s requirements, as well as the current conditions. Different factors come into play, such as a small space, tight deadlines, limited budget, correcting a poorly executed design by a previous designer, and balancing functionality with aesthetic appeal."
Do you use innovative materials or technologies to make transformations easier and safer?
"Yes, I often use more natural materials that are strong yet lightweight in structure. These materials are not only sustainable but also easier to handle during transformations. Additionally, I incorporate smart technologies, such as automated systems and adjustable furniture, which enhance both safety and ease of use. These innovations allow for more flexibility in the design while ensuring that the space remains practical and adaptable over time."
How do you see the future of transformational interior design? Do you think clients' needs in this area will change?
"Transformational design has great potential. The future will likely see an increase in modular solutions that allow for easy changes in space functionality. Eco-friendly and recycled materials will be actively used to create transformational solutions. Clients will increasingly demand flexible spaces, especially with the growing number of remote professionals and changing lifestyles. The integration of artificial intelligence and automation will enable the creation of spaces that adapt to people’s moods and needs."
